Over the Christmas weekend we were hiking in the Stirling Ranges and on top of the Toolbrunup mountain were lots of flies and I made a few good shots of this beauty. It's only slightly bigger then a normal fly.
Brilliant images of this fly. It’s in the Tachinidae ( has a bristly abdomen) and I think it is an Amphibolia sp. If it is, its not the described species from WA I have managed to track down (see Parmanov 1968, Aust J. Zool. 16: 349-404) which has a black abdomen when viewed from behind.

Nothing can compare to the original shapes of flora and fauna. Life is beautiful and while wandering around I regularly have a lucky find of some real pretty things. I used to take them home but nowadays I take my digital camera with me and leave them in place. They are my inspiration!
